I use this approach often. I'm the director/fundraiser for a religious non-profit and often when i'm signing receipts I'll pick up the phone and talk to the donor and ask for prayer requests. Here's a little note I got back on this months receipt:
Thank you, so much for your call in January. I felt so much peace after talking with you and thank you for your prayers for my daughter.
Now, those are the kinds of little notes that just make my day!

I am preparing to do a blog post myself that talks about the importance of keeping the human touch in business. We get so focus on connecting electronically, that we can sometime miss out on the human connection, which often makes the difference in business. I imagine in fund raising, it seems even more important I guess since you are asking for money.

Great post!

The organization I'm involved with, www.uPlej.com, has recognized the power of talking to charitable individuals over the phone and is now calling every person that joins us to thank them, get them excited and answer any questions they may have. We've gotten a lot of feedback from our users about how happy (and surprised) they were to receive a phone call from us. The phone is definitely a powerful tool when connecting with charitable individuals!
