My one caveat about working with volunteers is that it is critical to have a clearly defined job description in place before recruiting the volunteer to fill a slot that in a larger organization might be filled with a paid staff person. Small NPO's pride themselves on the family-like nature of their undertakings and too often the assumption is that one can't critique a volunteer's performanance because, after all, 's/he's doing it for nothing.' Not true!
