Trying to get back into Fund Development: I have been away from the nonprofit field for 4 years, pursuing a new career in real estate–which did not pan out. Now, as a 47-yr-old, with 16 years of hands on successful fund development, marketing and management experience, the doors seem closed. I don’t get it.
I keep responding to posted job announcements with agencie’s looking for someone with “3-5 years of fundraising experience.” But, when I apply, I never hear back from anyone. Is it because I’ve been away since 2004? Or, is it ageism catching up with me. I mean, I am really fit–I ride horses and work out on a regular basis, don’t smoke and present myself well. I had a reputation in the field for brillance, but I also spoke my mind (often), and that made me somewhat uppopular with a few Executive Director’s.
Sometimes I get paranoid that someone has been spreading negative comments about me…I just don’t know where to turn at this point. But, I DO know I want to get back into fund development. Any advice?

This might be a strange question. However, I need to start somewhere.
My situation is this. My stepdaughter is in a private christian high school and her father has not paid her tuition since Nov. 2007. I was able to ask the church where my stepdaughter attends for some of the money. They were able to raise half of it. (which is GREAT). But I still need the other half by the end of April 2008. I have never had to think about such desperate needs. I was able to contribute some myself. But I can’t afford the whole amount (or I would not even be asking this question)
So is it possible to raise money for a kids tuition? Or is fund raising only for nonprofit groups. I am not receiving any of the monies that have been raised. I had the church make the check directly to the school…
Has anyone ever done or heard of such a need? And is it possible to do so legally?

I’m not completely sure of what the official legalities are on personal fundraising. I know that each state has different rules on what you can and cannot do. There are also different rules about how you can and cannot do it. For instance if you hold a raffle or an auction there are specific licenses that many states may ask you to get.
I imagine that if the money is not going directly to the university that there may be some tax implications to receiving sizable gifts from people. My advice would be to stick with receiving money that pays the school directly.
